Overview

This 8-day tour brings you through four of Northern Vietnam's favorite places: Hanoi, Sapa, Ninh Binh, and Halong Bay. Your journey starts in Hanoi, a city filled with motorbikes, historic markets, and street food stalls. A local guide will take you through the Old Quarter to try popular dishes like bun cha, fresh banh mi, and egg coffee.

Next, you will travel into the mountains to Sapa. Here, you will walk through rice valleys alongside local guides from the Black H'mong and Dzay ethnic groups. You will see how locals live, walk along farm paths, and take a cable car up Mount Fansipan for views across the mountain range.

From the mountains, you head to Ninh Binh, known for its steep limestone rocks and quiet rivers. You can climb up Mua Cave for a view over the countryside, then ride a small wooden boat through the river caves of Trang An.

To finish your trip, you will head to the coast for an overnight cruise in Halong Bay. You can swim, try kayaking around the rock formations, explore a cave, or just relax on the boat deck. With clear plans and local guides to help you along the way, this trip gives you a solid taste of Northern Vietnam.

Travel guide

  • Documents: Check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months after your trip ends. Most visitors need an e-Visa before entering Vietnam. You can apply online at least a week before you fly.
  • Packing: Pack light, breathable clothes for Hanoi and Ninh Binh. Sapa gets cold in the evening and at the top of Fansipan, so bring a jacket and good walking shoes.

  • Health: Stick to bottled or filtered water. If you get carsick easily, bring motion sickness pills for the winding mountain roads to Sapa.

  • Currency: Vietnam uses the Vietnamese Dong (VND). Major hotels accept credit cards, but you will need cash for local markets, street food, and tips.

  • Etiquette: Cover your shoulders and knees when visiting temples and pagodas. Always ask before taking photos of people in local villages.
