Ubud Cycling Tours vs Quad Biking: Which Should You Book?
If you are choosing between a cycling tour and quad biking around Ubud, the main difference is what you want from the activity.
Choose cycling if exploring the countryside is your priority. You will generally have more time to notice rice fields, villages, and everyday life along the route.
Choose quad biking if the ride itself is your priority. The appeal is riding through off-road tracks, mud, and uneven terrain rather than slowing down to take in the scenery.
Neither is automatically better. Your fitness, confidence, available time in Bali and tolerance for getting muddy can make one much more suitable than the other.

What Is the Experience Actually Like?
The biggest difference is not simply that one uses a bicycle and the other uses a motor. It is where your attention goes during the experience.
What a Cycling Tour Feels Like
On a cycling tour, the bicycle is mainly a way to move through the countryside.

Routes often pass rice fields, villages, and rural roads, with stops along the way rather than continuous riding from start to finish. This gives you more opportunities to look around, listen to your guide, and take in places you might otherwise pass quickly in a vehicle.
But do not assume that every Ubud cycling tour requires the same level of effort.
Some are designed as mostly downhill rides. One current operator, for example, describes its route as about 90% gentle downhill riding, while other tours use e-bikes or follow different terrain.
That makes the exact route more important than the words “cycling tour.”
What Quad Biking Feels Like
Quad biking puts much more of your attention on the vehicle and the terrain in front of you.

Depending on the operator, a route may include jungle tracks, mud, water, sections near rice fields, slopes, tunnels, or other off-road features. The experience is generally more about handling the ATV through these conditions than stopping often to explore the surroundings.
ATV tracks also vary between operators. Some focus on jungle and river terrain, while others promote caves, waterfalls, or longer off-road sections as the main attraction.
Which Is More Physically Demanding?
Cycling usually requires more cardiovascular effort, but that does not mean it is always the harder activity.
A mostly downhill ride may involve relatively little sustained pedalling. A mixed-terrain or off-road route can require much more effort. An e-bike reduces the effort needed on climbs or longer stretches.
You still need enough balance and cycling confidence to steer, brake, and control your speed. Someone who is uncomfortable on a bike may not enjoy a tour simply because it is described as an easy downhill ride.
Quad biking removes the pedaling, but it is not a passive activity.
You need to steer, control the vehicle, and respond to uneven surfaces. Rough tracks, bumps, and body movement can become tiring, especially if the route is challenging or you spend a long time on the ATV.
This means the choice should not be reduced to “cycling if you're fit, ATV if you're not.”
If you are comfortable cycling and choose a gentle route, cycling may feel easy. If you dislike rough rides or find bumps uncomfortable, quad biking may feel more physically demanding than expected.
Beginners should also look beyond labels such as “beginner friendly.” ATV operators normally provide a briefing before the ride, but you still need to control a motorized vehicle on changing terrain. Restrictions and rider requirements vary between operators, so check them before booking.
How Much Time Does Each Experience Really Take?
One of the easiest booking mistakes is comparing the advertised duration without checking how much time is actually spent riding.
A cycling excursion can include:
- pickup and travel to the starting point
- bike fitting and briefing
- cycling
- sightseeing or cultural stops
- meals
- return transport
A four- or five-hour experience therefore does not mean four or five hours continuously on a bicycle.
The same applies to quad biking.
You may need time for registration, safety instructions, and equipment before riding. Afterwards, there may be time for showering, changing, eating, and waiting for the return transfer.
For example, current Ubud ATV products may include about 90 minutes of actual quad-bike riding while also providing lockers, showers, and other facilities around the activity.
When comparing two tours, look at actual riding time and total door-to-door time separately.
This matters especially if the activity is only one part of your day. A tour that looks short on the booking page can take up much more of your morning or afternoon once transfers and preparation are included.
What Are the Practical Trade-Offs?
The two experiences can also leave you in different conditions for whatever you plan to do next.
On a cycling tour, sun, heat, or rain can affect how comfortable the ride feels. Road and trail surfaces also vary, so a quiet downhill countryside route is very different from cycling on rougher tracks.
Quad biking has a different practical issue: getting dirty may be part of the experience.
If the track includes muddy sections or water, expect your clothes and footwear to get dirty. Some ATV operators provide showers and changing facilities, but check what is included with the specific tour you are considering.
If you want to finish the activity and move straight into Ubud sightseeing, lunch, or another stop, cycling may be easier to combine with other plans. After a muddy ATV ride, you may want enough time to shower and change first.
Weather can affect either experience, so check what the operator does in poor conditions rather than assuming rain automatically means cancellation.
Which Works Better for Your Group?

For couples, think about whether you both want to ride independently or would prefer a shared activity. Some ATV operators offer tandem riding if one person does not want to drive.
For families visiting Bali, children's ages, cycling ability, and operator restrictions are more important. ATV rules for driving alone or riding tandem are not the same across all companies, so check the specific product.
For mixed-confidence groups, pace can become important. If one person is nervous about the activity, an otherwise easy ride may not feel relaxing to them. ATV groups with riders of very different confidence levels may also need to move at a pace that works for everyone.
That is where details such as group size, private-tour options, and tandem arrangements, where available, can matter.
The useful question is, will everyone in our group be comfortable doing this particular version of it?
What Should You Check Before Booking?
Before booking, compare the details of the specific tour rather than choosing based only on the headline and photos.
For a cycling tour, check:
- how much actual cycling is involved
- route distance
- whether the route is mostly downhill or includes climbs
- standard bicycle or e-bike
- road, trail or mixed terrain
- the type and number of stops
- group size
- whether a support vehicle is available
- whether hotel pickup is included and which areas are covered
For quad biking, check:
- actual time on the ATV
- the type of track
- single or tandem riding
- group size
- rider age and other restrictions
- whether showers and changing facilities are provided
- lockers and towels
- whether photos or videos cost extra
- transfer coverage
For either activity, also check what the price includes, cancellation terms, insurance information, and the operator's weather policy.
Most importantly, compare the route and actual riding time, not just the words “cycling tour” or “quad biking.”
So, Should You Book Cycling or Quad Biking?
By this point, the choice should come down to what you want to get from the experience.
If you are still undecided, ask yourself:
What would you be more disappointed to miss: exploring the countryside at a slower pace or the off-road ride itself?
Your answer will usually tell you which one to book.
If you don't want to think much about it, you may also consider checking Advensa's readymade Bali packages with such activities already included.
